Counselors in Training (CITs)

**2024 UPDATE: We are not accepting CITs this year due to increased supervision requirements for minors. Please consider joining us as a camper!**

Deaf and ASL Camps have a limited number of spaces available for 16- and 17-year-olds to serve as Counselors in Training. CITs must pay a fee to cover their meals & lodging (2020 rate is $200). Mandatory counselor trainings include: pre-camp online videos, in-person training on Sunday before camp begins, and a small group CIT meeting with the Manidokan site director.

  1. CIT application – (Online form) (Printable form) To be completed by the CIT.
  2. CIT reference form – To be completed by someone who knows the CIT well. (A teacher, coach, counselor, pastor, etc – NOT a family member.)

Due: May 15. CITs will be notified by May 31.

If you are 18 or older, DO NOT complete this form. E-mail us at DeafCampsInc@gmail.com on or after March 15 to receive the application link.

  1. I am a GODA and 17 years old. is the CIT program appropriate for me to get more involved in the deaf and HoH community?

  2. Hi. My daughter will be 16 years old in May. She has been learning ASL this year. She loves it. She has single sided deafness. She is an honor student who is considering a career in child psychology within the deaf community. She would like a volunteer opportunity where she could help and practice her ASL skills. Would this program be something for her? Thank you.

    1. Absolutely! She is welcome to apply for a spot as a CIT and we would consider her for a position with our Younger ASL Camp. 🙂 Applications are due March 15. Hope to hear from you soon!

  3. Hi! Do CITs stay in the camp? I was curious about the lodging arrangements, and how long the camp would (tentatively) go in 2021, assuming it happens with the Covid-19 Situation. Thanks!

    1. Hi Kayla!

Thank you for inquiring about Deaf Camp. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the number of campers and staff we are able to have this summer at camp is limited. That being said, we are not able to accommodate CIT’s this year. We thoroughly appreciate your interest in Deaf Camps and should be back on track to accept applications for CIT’s for the 2022 summer camp season. To answer your question though, CIT’s do stay in the lodges with whatever group they are assigned to and camp lasts for about a week usually end of July or first week of August. We hope you apply next year to become a CIT! If you are not already, please follow our Instagram account and Facebook page (Deaf Camps Inc.) to stay updated with details about camp and fundraisers.

      Thanks!

    1. Hi Anna,
Yes, we welcome a diverse range of campers, CITs, and counselors, including those with autism. However, we do not have any spots for CITs this year. We invite any potential CITs to register as campers this summer so they can learn about the program, then apply to be a CIT next year!

  4. Are you still accepting volunteers for summer 2023? My daughter is 17 with 2 years of ASL learning in school. Could she volunteer for 1 week?

    1. For 2023, we are only accepting volunteers age 18 and up. Your daughter is welcome to attend as a camper, which will give her lots of opportunities to practice and improve her ASL skills alongside d/hh peers for the entire week. Hope to see her there!

  5. If my daughter has taken ASL 1 and 2, and interacted with multiple hearing impaired people, but doesn’t have any hearing loss of her own, would she still be able to be a CIT or camper?

  6. Hello, my daughter is a junior in high school and has taken ASL 1 and 2 and the community college. Do you still have the CIT program?

    1. We are not accepting CITs in 2024. ASL students are invited to register for ASL Camp. ASL campers and Deaf campers are integrated in each age group, which provides daily opportunities to learn about ASL and Deaf culture.

    1. We do not yet have a definite answer to your question, but likely not. ASL students are encouraged to register for ASL Camp. ASL campers and Deaf campers are integrated in each age group, which provides daily opportunities to learn about ASL and Deaf culture. Thank you!
