TRANSCRIPT (Virtual Camp Welcome Video):
Welcome to Virtual Deaf Camps, Inc!
Due to all that has happened this year with the Coronavirus pandemic and closings, we have moved DCI to a virtual platform! Our campers’ health and safety is our top priority. We are still committed to promoting the physical, spiritual, and social development of Deaf/hard of hearing children and children learning American Sign Language.
Yes, it will be different, but we look forward to the new and exciting memories and activities we will share through our virtual Deaf Camps Inc. this year!
How will this work?
You will receive an email Sunday Aug. 2nd at 8:00am with a link. Once you click that link, you will be taken to the virtual campground. You will see different parts of camp through the different pages. On each page, look around for the pictures of people or things and click on that – it will take you to the different activities. Different activities will be uploaded daily so be sure to check the virtual campground each day for new activities and opportunities to connect with your fellow campers!
Each day, you will be able to upload and share your activities and progress on Flipgrid for other campers and counselors to see. If Flipgrid is new to you, the virtual campground will have a how-to powerpoint to help introduce that system.
We will have a scavenger hunt throughout the week that you may complete with your fellow campers as a team challenge! Your camp group will receive points for the activities they complete on the scavenger hunt. If Goosechase is new to you, the virtual campground will have a how-to powerpoint to help introduce that system.
Get your talents ready!
On Thursday August 6th, we will have our traditional camp talent show!! Campers will upload their talents and special skills to a specific Flipgrid topic. If you know exactly what you want to share and you have your video by Monday or Tuesday, feel free to put it up! On Thursday, we will watch all the videos and celebrate together! We can’t wait to see all of your talents!
Two important points about the Flipgrid videos:
First: Though we trust our campers and their judgement to upload videos appropriate for camp, ALL videos will be screened by DCI volunteers before they are released for all campers to see! If you try to post something that is not appropriate, we will not release your video, and we will send a warning.
Second: We have a variety of campers – deaf and hearing, who sign fluently or are still learning. For all videos that are uploaded please make sure that all Deaf & ASL campers can enjoy them! If you are able to sign even a little bit, please make sure in your video you go ahead and sign as much as you can. Remember, we all come together to learn and celebrate ASL! Also, all videos should have captions. You can add captions in different ways: you can use Flipgrid to add words to your video on a sticky note. Some people prefer to use a special app to add captions – that’s ok, too. If you are stuck and need assistance with signing or captioning please e-mail us at deafcampsinc@gmail.com and we will do our best to help you.
Thank you for participating in this new Virtual Deaf & ASL Camp. We’re glad you’re here, and we look forward to socializing and signing with you all week!

TRANSCRIPT (What is DCI?):
Hi, I’m Louise, president of Deaf Camps Inc., or “DCI.” This is a year of many strange changes and new opportunities. We are excited to share this new experience with you all! Some of you already know that DCI is an all-volunteer organization – the counselors, the directors, and the board members all volunteer their time to work year-round toward our mission of promoting the physical, spiritual, and social development of Deaf/hard of hearing children and children learning American Sign Language. We work together to plan camp and also to raise funds for scholarships. Many campers can’t participate in camp without financial assistance. Fortunately this year, our program is open to any camper who has the technology access. We hope your camper will take advantage of the opportunity to socialize, learn, and enjoy even though we can’t gather in person. If you want to support our organization & our mission further, you can:
- Visit us at our website, Facebook or Instagram.
- Participate in our fundraisers that happen throughout the year.
- Help us spread the word about our fundraisers and our camp.
- Donate to our scholarship fund.
- Volunteer with us year round or the week of camp.
Thank you, and we hope you have a wonderful week!
